The Catwoman Costume in the Batman Comic Series

By

For seventy years, Batman has been one of the most popular comic book characters. Developed by “Detective Comics” writers Bill Finger and Bob Kane, he first showed up in DC comic #27 as a support character, but quickly broke out into his own series. His popularity continued to climb, which saw the introduction of many other characters including the Boy Wonder, Robin, his faithful sidekick who was the son of murdered circus acrobats. Obviously, the two masked heroes have murdered parents in common. Batman would also meet Selina Kyle, the prowler in the Catwoman costume, who had something else in common with Bruce Wayne: they both preferred the cover of night.

In fact, the Catwoman costume appeared in the very first issue of the Batman comic, when he was often called “the World’s Greatest Detective,” and of course, “the Dark Knight.” Selina Kyle’s Catwoman was one of many secondary characters that would make recurring appearances in the pages of the DC series. Perhaps her frequent returns and continued popularity was due to the fact that she was neither a protagonist nor an antagonist. She wasn’t necessarily his ally but she wasn’t an enemy either, even though her exploits were criminal in nature. She was often used as a foil for exposing some of Bruce Wayne’s human side.

The Batman comic book quickly branched out into other mediums with a television show and major motion picture. Though very campy, the small screen portrayal is still one of the most memorable and iconic television shows of all time. One of the reasons for this, though, might be due to the beautiful women who donned the Catwoman costume over the tenure of the show’s success. Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether, and Eartha Kitt all played her on the show. In recent years, the slinky cat burglar has also been portrayed by Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry.

Over the years, the Catwoman costume has undergone many changes, even though the basic idea has always been the same. She is a sexy, graceful creature that leaps from rooftops and descends into buildings to steal whatever treasures lie inside. Because of this, her clothing is form fitting. She always wears boots, a mask, and gloves, but the fabric used to make her garments have changed. In the beginning this might have included nylon or lycra, but the latest iterations probably found her in leather or vinyl.

Wearing a Catwoman costume is often a good standby on Halloween. These costumes are familiar and often very easy to find. You can even make them yourself if you aren’t too keen on authenticity. However, if you are interested in wearing something that more closely resembles what you may have seen in the movies, you should look for a store that carries replicas. There are manufacturers out there that specialize in movie replicas that are not exact, but are close enough to the real thing that the illusion works. They are often quite affordable and you can find them at a local Halloween superstore or even online.
