After school begins in the fall, many young students begin to look forward to Halloween. Young children especially seem to enjoy this holiday, perhaps because of all the candy. Of course, older kids like it too, but often it is more because of the socializing and mischief that goes along with it. Regardless of why you might enjoy the holiday, you cannot truly partake in it without wearing a costume. If you are creative and handy, you might design and make one yourself, but many people just go with something traditional and simple, like a skeleton costume.

The skeleton costume is actually more traditional than you might think. First of all, you will find this figure, among many others, if you look into the fall holiday of Dia de Las Muertes, which is celebrated in Hispanic cultures. Translated as “the Day of the Dead,” this tradition is based on the belief that on All Saint’s Day (the day after Halloween), spirits of loved ones who have passed can come back to visit their friends and family that are still living. During this time, though, evil spirits may try to take them to the Underworld, or Hell, so everyone would wear disguises to confuse them.

Of course, this is not the only tradition that is steeped in the history of Halloween, though it is perhaps the most well understood custom in the west. Even many Catholics do not fully understand the important of All Hallows Eve, which is how the holiday is recognized according to some calendars. Some historians even trace its roots back to as early as Celtic times. No matter how you look at it, though, the tradition of wearing a skeleton costume, among other possible costumes, is one that has been longstanding and will likely continue for many more years to come.

While the skeleton costume may seem simple enough, there are actually many different versions that you can choose from. The best designers and manufacturers will make costumes that very closely resemble the human makeup. Now, as a costume, the portrayal might not necessarily be completely accurate and to scale, but you can usually tell the difference between a high quality costume and one that is cheaply made. Overall, though, these outfits are one-piece black outfits that you slip into. They are often skin tight and have the front and back depiction of the bones screened onto the fabric.

Since the skeleton costume is one of the most common and popular costumes in both the Latin tradition and the less historical but equally cultured American customs, it should not be very difficult to find one for the upcoming Halloween season. You might want to start at your local Halloween superstore or costume supplier. Typically you will see more of these as you get closer to October. They will likely have everything you can imagine when it comes to Halloween. You might also want to consider hunting them down online. This could prove to be more convenient and cost-effective in the long wrong.
