Halloween Outfits and Costumes
73It’s getting to be that time of year again: the leaves are changing colors, the days will start getting shorter, and the temperature is beginning to drop. Yes, it is fall, and the season brings with it many changes. For families across the United States, this means no more summer vacation. After the back-to-school sales are done and once they are situated into their new school surroundings, many young people will focus their attention on the upcoming holiday season, which really begins with Halloween. They will start to plan what social events they might attend and which Halloween outfits they want to wear.
For younger children, this is always something that involves mom and dad too. Young kids might express their desire to wear Halloween outfits that depict their favorite cartoon character or simply just an animal. The youngest of children are often at the mercy of their parents, who are usually successful at achieving the cuteness that most people expect from babies and toddlers in costume. For teenagers and young adults, though, finding costumes can often be difficult because of the social implications behind them. Unfortunately, even though costumes should be a reflection of fun and free-spiritedness, the wrong outfit can backfire if worn by someone who is not very confident.
Although Halloween is a popular holiday in the United States, it has roots that can be traced back as far as some early Celtic traditions. This is arguably where the idea of donning Halloween outfits began. Traditionally, the Halloween season was a time of reflecting on family members who had passed, which is generally understood as the purpose of All Saint’s Day. Catholics celebrate All Hallows Eve, one day before All Saints Day, by welcoming their deceased loved ones “home.” The Celts would wear masks and costumes to confuse evil spirits who might try to take them away.
In America, though, Halloween outfits are a time-honored custom that is technically free of religious affiliation; much like Christmas. Even though many people realize the religious undertones of these holidays, the country as a whole recognizes that festivities do not need to be limited to religious ceremonies. Indeed, this is why families of all cultures and spiritual belief systems participate in the Halloween customs of parties and trick-or-treating. It is all in good fun and a great way to bring people together in the community.
If you are planning a Halloween party, you better be prepared with a good costume. If you go to a local Halloween warehouse, you should be able to find many functional Halloween outfits that will be perfect for the occasion. As a host, you need to be able to move freely and accommodate all of your guest’s needs, so you don’t want to wear something that is too restrictive or vague. At the same time, if you are the guest of a party, get as creative as you can, particularly if there is a contest. The sky’s the limit, when it comes to your costume ideas so take some time to do it right!
